Who would believe that aside from stunning beaches and mountains, adorable theme parks and national parks, Malaysia has a gorgeous yet spooky castle in the 19th century—which unfortunately remains unfinished to these days?

The ruins of the 19th-century castle

In Batu Gajah, Perak lies the castle of William Kellie Smith, famous for the name Kellie’s Castle. It was built in the 19th century but was never finished, thus leaving beautiful yet tragic ruins.

Has become one of the major tourist destinations over the years

Though the castle remains unfinished, it is restored and carefully maintained as a tourist attraction. In fact, a number of tourists have been visiting Kellie’s Castle. While some are greatly fascinated with its romantic ruins, there are also some who find the castle haunted. Thanks to many art organizers who hold sketch activities in the place, which make it look like more of an art destination than a horror house.

Like the infamous Taj Mahal, Kellie’s Castle was built as a symbol of love for his wife, Agnes, a Scottish woman whom he brought over to Malaysia after marrying. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Helen—but William wanted a son. His wife had trouble conceiving another child that it took her another eleven years to bore a child—and that time, Agnes gave birth to a son, Anthony. As a celebration, William started the construction of the castle, which he named after his mother: Kellie’s Castle. Unfortunately, due to the Spanish flu, which spread from Europe to Asia soon after the World War I, the workers in the castle were struck by the flu causing them death. Cutting the long story short, the castle was never completed.

Some claim Kellie’s Castle as ghost house

As for the spooky story behind the castle, some claim to see the spirit of William pacing in the 2nd floor corridor at the wee hours of the night, while Helen haunts her old bedroom.
